Things We Throw Away: Dublin City Council

Screen Shot 2015-03-18 at 03.23.24Things We Throw Away was commissioned by Dublin City Council as part of the Dublin City Public Art Programme, -Strand 2 – Interaction with the City. Strand 2 was an open call for proposals in any artform and which could include temporary, time-based or permanent art.

Things We Throw Away are five short operas (approx seven minutes long) presented by Wide Open Opera with music by Brian Irvine and script by John McIlduff. The performers sing live and are accompanied by a specially recorded soundtrack, performed by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra conducted by Fergus Sheil. One opera has a community Choir.

Each of the five operas was inspired by the lives of real people in the city dramatising the short moments that would normally go un-noticed or be discarded on the street. The idea was to capture the life and the poetry behind these almost inconsequential episodes.

The operas were originally performed as pop-up operas in 15 locations around Dublin city centre on the 4th and 5th of July, 2014 finishing with a promenade performance of all five operas on Dame Court. Wide open Opera has been commissioned to present the operas again as part of Music Town 2015.
